Introduction to teeth dentures

Dentures are synthetic dental appliances that are used as a replacement for teeth, almost looking the same as original teeth. They are removable and are made of synthetic plastic or resin flesh-colored acrylic base that fits over the gums. The upper portion covers the roof of the mouth, while the lower part is horseshoe-shaped to accommodate the tongue.

How are they made?

  • First, a prosthodontist takes an impression to capture the patient’s upper and lower gums. A thick paste is placed in the patient’s mouth for a few seconds.
  • While the impression is still soft, it is poured into stone, which acts as a cast.
  • This cast becomes a replica of the patient’s mouth and is useful during the final stages of creating the dentures.
  • Meanwhile, the patient tries on different sets of dentures to determine the size and color of their future teeth.
  • From there, the prosthodontist makes some adjustments to the cast.
  • Next, the cast of the mouth is sent to the lab, where the dentures are made.
  • Using the patient’s cast as a reference, the lab begins creating a wax model of the gum line.
  • Minor adjustments are made to the wax around the teeth, and the model is sent back to the prosthodontist.
